While electric vehicles are seen as the future for road transport, the same can’t be said for the shipping industry.
Batteries can’t yet power 100,000-ton container ships from one side of the world to the other, so ships’ engines look set to rely on fossil fuels for the foreseeable future. But clever ways to make the ships more efficient are being tested out.
One idea is to blow millions of tiny bubbles under the hulls of these giant vessels – not to make them float more, but to make them glide through the water more easily. The BBC’s Nick Holland finds out how this works and looks at other innovative energy-saving solutions being used at sea.
