Case Study: Retrofit

In October 2019 Silverstream received an order to supply The Silverstream® System to the Sapphire Princess. This is the second vessel in the Gem-class to be fitted with air lubrication and Princess Cruises took the decision following more than 2 years of successful operation of the system onboard sister ship Diamond Princess. The vessel will by drydocked in Singapore in April 2020 and the equipment will be installed during this 2 week outage and commissioning will be conducted when the vessel is back in normal cruising operations.

Case Study: New Build

The Silverstream® System will be installed on Finnlines 3 new hybrid Ro-Ro vessels which are being built in Chinese shipyard Jinling. The vessels are based on the same hull as the Grimaldi Green 5th Generation vessels and are thus sister vessels but customized to the needs of Finnlines with regards to heavy cargo and operation in cold climates (designed to meet the highest Finnish/Swedish ice class, 1A Super).

Silverstream will be responsible for designing and supplying the air lubrication system and will assist the shipyard during installation and commissioning with the first vessel due to be delivered in 2021.

Case Study: New Build

In August 2018 Grimaldi Group announced that it would be installing the Silverstream® System on its fleet of new hybrid Ro-Ro vessels. Grimaldi’s Green 5th Generation (GG5G) vessels, which are designed to increase efficiency and reduce emissions will be built over the next three years at the Chinese shipyard Jinling. Silverstream will be responsible for designing and supplying the system and will assist the shipyard during installation and commissioning. The first vessel will be completed by May 2020 and is expected to be operational on Mediterranean Ro-Ro Trade routes by Q3 2020.

Case Study: Retrofit

The retrofitted installation on the Diamond Princess entered operation in June 2017.  The system was supplied within 20 weeks, including transit from Northern Europe to the shipyard in Asia.  Following installation of the air release units and compressors during a 10 day dry dock, the system was completed and commissioned by a riding crew during normal operations, prior to handing over the system.  In- depth data analysis took place between commissioning and August 2018 which proved the system to be delivering fuel savings and emissions reductions above the projected 5%.

Case Study: New Build

The Norwegian Joy entered service in June 2017 following her build at the Meyer Werft yard in Pappenburg.  Silverstream worked closely with the yard during the 2.5 year build programme to supply and install the Silverstream® System.  The air release units were fabricated off- site then welded into the double hull and the compressors were supplied by Atlas Copco and linked to the Wärtsilä automation system.  Silverstream was present during the sea trials to provide training and assistance to the crew prior to the handover of the vessel.  The Norwegian Joy is the first cruise ship in the world to save fuel with the Silverstream®System.

In partnership with Shell and Dannebrog Rederi/ WECO Tankers, the Silverstream® System was installed on the Amalienborg in just 14 days. Air release units were manufactured to order and welded into place during a standard dry docking by Fayard’s onsite engineers. Compressors were located in the bosun store and the automation system on the bridge. Both contractors  and crew commented on the ease of installation and operation.%.
