Several fuel saving innovations promise to produce efficiency gains. The most promising so far has been the ‘magic carpet’ effect developed by Silverstream Technologies in which a layer of micro- bubbles is dispersed under the hull, thereby reducing drag. Trials on Stena Weco’s MT Amalienborg are producing fuel savings in the region of 4% and it is believed they may reach as high as 10% when the system is fully operational.
