SMM & Gastech wrap-up: two industry events, hundreds of clean tech conversations

In early September, the Silverstream team were out in force at two industry events in Germany and Italy. Some of us attended SMM in Hamburg, and others were present at Gastech in Milan, during a busy week of reconnecting with partners and colleagues, and talking to more people about our work and technology.

As Hamburg and Milan became clusters of maritime activity for the first time in the post-pandemic age, they played host to a huge range of discussions on the future of the maritime sector. Despite a gulf of several hundred miles, those discussions were similar in topic and tone, with near unilateral focus on the single largest issue of our times: how to enable and realise profitable decarbonisation within an increasingly short timeframe.

Our week in Hamburg started with an invitation to SMM’s opening ceremony. Themes of collaboration and partnership were apparent in the speeches and performances, as was the industry’s growing focus on future fuels and clean technologies. Meanwhile, the significance of it being the 30th edition of the event gave everyone an extra reason to celebrate and reflect on the progress the industry has made in the last six decades.

Silverstream had a stand at the event, which proved the perfect venue to meet old friends and new contacts. Our Chief Technologist, David Connolly, was also invited to participate at the global maritime environment congress (gmec). During his panel, David spoke about the importance of collaboration and transparency, as this article in Seatrade Maritime News explains.

“It's important to remove the adversarial and come to a more collaborative approach. To me it is very much about transparency, but it’s also about making sure that all parties have skin in the game.”

We were overwhelmed with the amount of interest and engagement across the week and are proud to have been a part of a show that had 2000 exhibitors and 30,000 visitors.

A few hundred miles away, in Milan, more of our team at the Silverstream stand were closely engaging with the LNG market and its stakeholders, which is a key segment of focus for Silverstream. We were able to talk in detail about our recent projects with Shell and others, with a particular focus on our Silverstream® System installation on Methane Patricia Camila.

What was clear at both events was the level to which the tone of debate had shifted, not just on decarbonisation or future fuels, but on clean technologies as well. The spirit of innovation was present at both events, and it was apparent that sustainability strategies are now mainstream, not the preserve of progressive outliers.

The attending Silverstream teams at these events were truly invigorated after meeting so many people in person following a hiatus of nearly three years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We are looking forward to the next events in our diaries, which includes Marintec and many more in 2023.
